Run AWAY from your dog in Emergencies!
" I just wanted to share with you my overwhelming gratitude. Your book The Other End of the Leash helped me save a dog's life yesterday. I'm a dog trainer in the DC area, and yesterday I was working with a client with a new Cairn Terrier. They lived by a busy road, so she had no choice but to walk the dog beside a lot of traffic. As my client was walking her puppy, she fell a few steps behind me. When I looked back, the puppy was wriggling backwards and slipped right out of her collar. My client's college-age son made a lunge at the dog, causing it to duck and shy away, right toward traffic.
I saw what was happening, and turned away from the dog and ran a few steps, and it started to follow me. I shouted at the son, "Turn around! Turn around! Run AWAY from her! I even grabbed him and turned him around. Two men were coming down the sidewalk, and the son said "Grab that dog!" The men made a grab at her and she ran away, this time coming inches frm the fast-moving traffic. I shouted at the strangers, "Turn AROUND! Move AWAY from the dog!" They did, and the son did, and I did, and finally the little dog came up right next to me, where I crouched in the grass. I reached to take hold of her, and shebit me twice. I didn't care. She was trembling violently.
I wanted to share this story with you because the only reason I had the presence of mind to remember to turn away from the dog and run is because I had JUST read the story in the introduction of The Other End of the Leash, where you and a friend were able to save a dog from a highway death that way. I'm so grateful for your book."
Thanks for this heart-warming letter, Hillary. We might also recommend the video Lassie Come! This instructional video was filmed at Trisha's southwestern Wisconsin farm, and gives 45 minutes of instruction on how to get your dog to come EVERY time you call!
