Identifying and Treating Trauma in Dogs

All mammals have the physiology and neurobiology necessary to be psychologically traumatized by an event that overwhelms their ability to cope. In addition, the behavior of these animals often mirrors that of people who have experienced severe and life changing traumas. This knowledge necessitates an understanding by medical experts, applied behaviorists and trainers, of how to both diagnosis and treat animals who have been psychologically traumatized. We’ll discuss how the experiences of animals and people might be similar, how they might be different, and current best practices in helping traumatized individuals, of any species, to recover.
