I just couldn’t resist sending this out: Without question the most amazing cake ever made in the world, thanks to my hosts in Boxboro, MA at the New England Dog Training Club. Nancy and Cindy had the cake made. (My thanks to creative genius Jeannie at Wilson Farm in Lexington, MA!)
We had a lovely dinner last night at Nancy and Wade’s beautiful home, and I’m anticipating a wonderful night tonight, speaking in Boxboro about my memoir, The Education of Will. It sounds like there are still a few seats available, hope to see you there tonight. Please come up and say hi; I’ve met several blog readers and dedicated commenters on the book tour already, and I can’t tell you how much I love putting faces to names.
Without further ado, here’s the best cake in the world:
They even made pages on the side. (And yes, no one wanted to cut into Willie’s face!)

I can’t begin to put into words the emotions I felt as you spoke last night: anticipation, joy, sadness, and admiration… the primary ones, among others. 😉 You are a strong, talented, woman and I so admire your work. I have long been an avid fan of your books, and just recently began buying and viewing your DVD’s. I can’t tell you how happy it made me to finally meet you last night. You’re an inspiration to everyone who loves dogs, and now you’ve inspired survivors of trauma with your courage, dignity, grace, and willingness to share the story of your healing. It was an honor, and I thank you. Cheryl

I loved reading “THE EDUCATION OF WILL! ”
Thank you for sharing your personal journey as well as Will’s amazing story. As I continue to train & work with my 2 dogs as a therapy dog team, your insights & patience are a reminder to stay focused on what they are saying to me in all of our conversations. I’m “listening ” all the time!
Best Wishes Trisha,
Lana

I appreciate your honesty and courage in telling your story and Willie’s story. I will use this with clients that have dogs showing signs of trauma. Something that stood out to me is the fact you never knew what or how Willie was traumatized. You just accepted that he had the signs and needed help. SO MANY dogs are blamed for “bad” behavior and labled aggresive or stubborn just because we don’t have a specific account of the traumatizing event. Dogs are telling us they need help. Thank you for example of really listening.

Amazing cake! I couldn’t have cut into it.
Very insightful book too – I knew the writing would be great from the excerpts you posted, but the content gave me a lot (LOT!) to think about. Thank you for your courage in bringing difficult-to-bring-up topics into the light. I’ve sent it as gifts to two friends.

Wow, what a cake! That is beautiful.
I just finished reading The Education of Will. It hit home in so many ways for me. I am presently sharing my life with my first truly fearful dog. Unlike Will, she responds to new things by shutting down rather than with aggression. In addition, I have a couple of major traumas in my background that make me distrustful of unknown people, one of which was that my first dog was shot dead next to me while hiking in the woods (purposely).
Your book made me realize that my reactions to surprises, new people, and even new dogs in the forest near my home may interact with the responses of my fearful dog. It may be a two-way street, with each of us feeding off of one another. Thank you for helping me become more aware of this possibility. Now, what to do about it? That’s always the hard part.
I literally lost sleep reading your book because I couldn’t stop reading – and stayed up far too late! Thank you so much for sharing this memoir with us.

The Education of Will chronicles an amazing journey through the pitfalls of life as a woman. Thank you for your honesty and for sharing your pain and your joy. I’m continually amazed at how Will helped you heal even as he was getting over his challenges. Thank you for sharing your journey and I hope it gets better every day.

I have been an admirer of your work for a long time. The first thing I recommend to anyone I know getting a new dog or puppy are your training books and your website. I also introduced my breeder to The Puppy Primer, she now gives a copy to anyone who adopts one of her puppies. As far as I’m concerned, you are the Gospel writer of dog training! I just finished your memoir and now I admire you even more! What an amazing book from start to finish. To tell ones story, the highs and the lows is really a brave endeavor. The parallels you drew between dogs and humans and the importance of understanding fear and trauma were amazing. Thank you for all you have contributed to the dog world! My hope is to hear you speak someday! Indy is a lovely city if you want to come speak here. If not, will have to make a trip north! Amazing book! Thank you!
