Let’s Talk: Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! My rescued dog, Tootsie, and I have been celebrating all month on my Facebook page, but there’s still plenty of time to help homeless dogs. This issue is currently more important than ever, given all the tragedies that have disrupted dogs and their families around the country.

Here is a list of resources to help dogs, whether you are involved in rescue, are considering adding a new dog to your family, or just want to help any way you can.

The ASPCA provides many free webinars, available to anyone, anytime. The topics range from shelter medicine to behavior and training, and just about everything in between. The four listed below are webinars I’ve given on adoption and on helping dogs stay happy and healthy while waiting for their new homes.

In addition, The Learning Center on my website is full of videos, blogs, books, DVDs and articles. You can search for a particular topic, or head straight to the Adopt A Dog page to get started.

Last, but not least, the book Love Has No Age Limit: Welcoming An Adopted Dog Into Your Home was written to help a newly adopted dog become the best dog ever. It includes:

  • What to do before you and your new dog enter the house
  • What to expect at 3 days, 3 weeks and 3 months
  • How to avoid overwhelming a new dog
  • Using positive training to get started on the right paw
  • Understanding minor behavioral problems vs. serious problems

Love Has No Age Limit
was written as a labor of love to help shelters and rescues find dogs their forever homes. We’ve made the price as low as we can, so that these groups can give out the book to adopters for free. If your home is already full, but you’d still like to help rescue dogs find new homes, please consider donating multiple copies of Love Has No Age Limit to your shelter or rescue of choice.

If you adopted your dog from a rescue or shelter, come help us celebrate on Facebook and Twitter! Tootsie would love to say hi!
