I promised I'd send this out in a blog when it was ready, so here it is for those of you who've been asking for us to do another DVD combo. We put together our two best selling DVDs in a package. Through this Friday the 17th, you can order a PACKAGE of Lost in Translation: How Dogs use Sight, Sound and Scent to Communicate and Treating Dog-Dog Reactivity and save $20. Spoiler alert to those out of the US: ARGH, although Katie has been working non-stop on it for 3 weeks now, we still can't get our new website to manage the postage for international shipping. We've made progress and have hopes (springing eternal) that we can soon, but please be patient. We can't be trying any harder than we are already! MEANWHILE, back on the farm: Lots to tell you on Friday about life on the Read More
eBooks Available!
The rock stars at my office (that's Katie and Lisa and Denise) have made all the books that we publish, from The Puppy Primer to Feisty Fido, available as eBooks. You can learn more about ordering them by going to the website at PatriciaMcConnell.com. You can download them onto your Kindle, your Nook, your computer, your iPad and your forehead for all I know (okay, maybe not). I'll be writing my usual weekly blog tomorrow, but I wanted to get the word out about this now because, well, we've been working on it a long time and it's great to have it all working and the books available in this form. Enjoy! Read More
New Website and Free Shipping!
Happy Dance, Happy Dance! Our new and improved website is up and running. We're celebrating by offering FREE SHIPPING until the end of the week for books and DVDs. We've worked hard to make the product pages clear and complete, so that you'll have a good sense of what will best fit your needs. We've added a "Reading Room" with all my Bark articles and many of my blog posts categorized by subject. Some of you may remember that I asked a few months back about a possible title for this resource. We had initially called it "The Learning Center," but we began to have doubts that was the best title. We got lots of responses (thanks!) and readers agreed, and out of the titles we suggested, you all liked "The Library" or "Resource Center" best. However, several of you had concerns about using Read More
My Turn to Ask Advice (Website related)
We're working on a new website, and anyone who has been there knows that it's like building a house: the number of decisions needing to be made becomes ridiculous after awhile. That's the bad news, but here's the good news: I have the luxury of your feedback to help us make one of the decisions. Here's the question: What do we call the new section of the website that is a compendium of things I've written or taped that are available by the click of a mouse? It will include my Bark articles, blog posts and videos, all organize by topic. At the bottom of the 'page', if it's relevant, we'll include links to books, booklets and DVDs available for sale from the shopping cart. We are all excited about having this new part of the website available, but would love your thoughts on what to Read More
Repeating Cues: Information or Affect?
A blog reader asked a great question recently, in response to my comment that I couldn't help myself and repeated "Stay, Stay, Stay" to Willie when in a dangerous situation at the side of a busy highway. We all know that repeated cues, like the ever popular "Sit, Sit, Sit" are not exactly "best practice" in dog training. And yet, they are commonly used, especially by beginners; just go to any Beginning Family Dog Training class and you'll hear repeated cues thrown around like confetti at a homecoming parade. It was that very occurrence that helped inspire me to write The Other End of the Leash, about how the evolutionary backgrounds of people and dogs both help us (we're both crazy social and insanely playful) and hurt us (direct facial contact is polite to people, rude to dogs). "Sit, Read More
