I am truly excited about coming to England this November, where I'll be speaking in Milton Keynes, Newcastle and Bristol for the The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors. I'll be in Milton Keynes the evening of November 5th (Someone explain that name to me! It sounds more like an author than the name of a city.), in Newcastle on November 6th and Bristol on the evening of the 8th. The talks are being organized by the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors, a stellar organization that works to promote science-based animal training and provides a great deal of education to the public about animal behavior. (Truth in lending: I do get a speaking fee, but the primary motivation is to raise money for a good cause.) Here's the topic for the talks: Are You Thinking What I'm Read More
Zucchini, and Other Crisis
Well, seriously, an entire army of you begged for the Zucchini Yum recipe. Well, okay, maybe 4 or 5. I'd already written it out on Facebook, so it's no work to replicate it here. And really, if you don't have them, it might not make sense, but at this time of year, Zucchini truly does qualify as a CRISIS. (Later today I'll answer some of the comments about dogs fighting in the home--some heartbreaking, all fascinating--, but for now, in the knick of time): ZUCCHINI YUM RECIPE NUMBER ONE: 6 med Zucchini peeled and chopped or shredded, 4 TB butter, 2 med tomatoes diced and seeded, 2 c shredded cheese, 2 c soft bread crumbs, 2 eggs, 1 med onion diced, 1 tsp basil dry or a buncho chopped fresh basil (best!), 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp salt & pepper each. Saute Zucchini in Read More
Introducing Cats
Bringing home a dog when you have another one at home (or two or three or more) is one thing, but bringing a cat into a resident cat's territory is another thing altogether. Besides litter box problems, most of my "cat clients" were about aggression between a resident and an incoming cat. Blending cat families can be almost as complicated and fraught as two adult people moving in together with a group of unrelated and relatively unfamiliar adolescents. Let's just say that if cats could slam doors, they would. But then, who needs to slam doors when you can hiss, spit and attack with five discrete weapon sites on your body? Yes, dogs too can fight and might not get along, but in general it is much easier to add a dog to the pack than it is to add a cat if you have one already. This is Read More
The Animal Behavior Society Meetings 2013
First, a digression: Argh, how embarrassing. Jim just noticed in that last week's post I wrote "Next week I'll write a full report of the talks at the Animal Behavior Society 2013 Meeting in Boulder. I was great, lots to tell you about!" I meant, of course, "It was great". Jim's very words were: "I'm sure you were great, Trisha, but it's not like you to say so." Sigh. I'm not so sure that I was great (I thought my talk was good but not brilliant), but even if I thought I brought down the house I'd never say so. Sigh. But now, here's what WAS great: The Animal Behavior Society Meetings were in Boulder, Colorado this year, and they were a joy to attend. There’s so much information to convey that I’ll never manage doing so in one post, but here’s a start. First off, it has been Read More
Dog Bite Prevention 2013
It is Dog Bite Prevention week, and I am inspired to repeat a post I wrote last year about that topic. I don't usually repeat blogs, but I've seen so much pain and suffering (and I don't mean physical) over this issue that I am inspired to put it out into the universe once again. Several of you responded with some extremely thoughtful comments and interesting cases: It would be great to hear if you have any updates. Meanwhile, here's my piece on preventing dog bites, a bit different from the standard advice: From May 18, 2012: A million years ago, my first Border Collie Drift lept up and nipped a man's nose at the Wisconsin State Fair. Even though the man was clearly not injured, with virtually not even a red spot on his nose, I was shook up and appalled. He was furious. "Your dog Read More
