I put my 12 year old Sam down on a Friday morning and took the rest of the day off to mourn. At five PM I took up my usual shift as the fish fry cook at the Roxbury Tavern. I thought I could put my sobbing aside for the time being but I was surprised by my occasional bursts of tears as I prepared dinner for my customers. I shouldn’t have been surprised when often I had to walk away from my position for a minute to recover but the reaction of my clientele to my so public sorrow was beautiful. Some, of course looked away but most looked right at me as if to share my grief. They must have understood and been dog lovers as well.
